The priest spent his life faithfully tending to the temple of his beloved god, the largest one within the city in which he lived. Cleaning the stone and ensuring the altar was filled with fresh flowers and offerings. Giving guidance to those who came to the temple in need of aid. His life was a happy one spent in the name of the god who he worshipped and adored. It would have been like this for a lifetime until the priest gently passed away of old age had it not been for the war. Fire and death spread throughout the city as the invading army of a neighbouring city state chose to try and expand their territory. A foolish move that would only result in pain and many dead but one that they advanced with anyway. The invaders decided to make the defending army's victory a pyrrhic one by burning down as much of the city as possible and killing whoever they could. If they could not gain new land then no one would claim it. And so a small squad of soldiers came to the temple of the city and set about looting and burning what they could. The priest however refused to let this be and set about trying to fight off the soldiers. Unaccustomed to fighting as he was, he nevertheless made invading deeper into the holy site more trouble than it was worth for the enemy. They were already eager to leave and return to their homes and away from this foolish attempt at a land grab but they did not leave before inflicting a fatal wound upon the priest and setting alight the temple. The priest knew he was dying as he dragged himself to the statue of his god, yet he hoped that he might at least be able to pray for his city one last time.To give his blood and life before the god as sacrifice for his people. Yet as the flames licked the temple walls and his life blood seeped into the ground below he saw the gods statue move towards him. To slowly offer out a hand to the priest through the haze and the smoke. A hand most lovingly grasped. All that was left afterwards within the ashes where the temple once stood was a new statue of two men embracing one another.

In time the city began to heal and rebuild with a new temple being built. And a new legend of the city's patron god began to emerge from the aftermath of the destruction before. Of how once the temple was set aflame the invaders seemed to swiftly leave. Without scorching the earth behind like they had been before the blaze. Of how the priest's bones were nowhere to be found, and how the second statue held an uncanny look of the man.

And so the stories and legends of their god began to change, as all legends do. The temple became a home not only for the god alone but for the pair shown within the statue. That of the god and his most devout follower. The priest who centuries past devoutly protected the gods home to the last and was rewarded by being lifted from mortality to become the gods lover.

The two myths i associate with xabier and julia are dionysus and ariadne and perseus and andromeda, and true to my words i decided to draw them like my favorite mythology couples(alongside odypen obviosly).
